New bundle packs: Germany

Last Friday we could already add three new bundle packs to the German line-up, raising the total number to five, and today we can add another 4. They are:
PS3 12GB + PlayStation Move "Das Buch der Zaubersprüche" packA 12GB unit with PlayStation Move wand and camera bundled with “Wonderbook: Book of Spells”, or “Das Buch der Zaubersprüche” in German;

PS3 12GB 'Skylanders' packA 12GB model bundled with ‘Skylanders’;

PS3 500GB 'Sports Champions 2' packAnother pack that comes with PlayStation Move peripherals, this time a 500GB-capacity unit, bundled with ‘Sports Champions 2′;

PS3 500GB F1 2012 packLastly, there’s supposed to be an F1 2012 pack with a 500GB console but as opposed to the previous three we can’t find this one on Amazon.de yet. We’ll add it to the store as soon as we do.

English PS3 Ultra Slim TV commercial

“Smaller, lighter, still delivering… the Ultimate Gaming and Entertainment.
The World is in Play”

We found this ad on YouTube, but where is it from?

Japanese PS3 Ultra Slim TV commercial

This advertisement runs on TV in Japan, we assume. (We found it on SCEJ’s PlayStation website).

The “25% smaller” 500GB and 250GB units are out there from 2012.10.04, at ¥29,980 and ¥24,980.

That new slider lid loader opens up all-new possibilities. Beware…

How to change the HDD of a PS3 Ultra Slim

There are quite a few videos on YouTube and elsewhere on the web by now about disassembling the new PS3 UltraSlim. The following one doesn’t go very far in terms of disassembly but it’s very practical: How to change the Hard Disk Drive in a PS3 ’4K series’ console.

It appears to be even easier than on a ‘fat’ PlayStation 3.

In the meantime, we’re still waiting for a confirmation whether the (solid state) memory in the new 12GB model can be replaced in the same easy way, i.e. whether it uses the same (SATA) interface.

First teardown of PS3 CECH-4000 published

As was to be expected (though iSuppli might have beaten them to it; they have scrutinized PS3 internals before) iFixit has been the first (aside from some YouTube videos, perhaps more about that soon) to take apart a PS3 Super Slim, lately also referred to as ’4K series’ — not because of an ultra-high-definition video output but simply because of its 4000 series type number  — and publish it.

Not suprisingly, the motherboard has been redesigned drastically. In line with recent information, the Cell B.E. and RSX chips have not been integrated.

What did strike us? Well, for one, this PlayStation 3 still contains a fan and heat sink, and fairly large ones at that, though surely not as big and costly as in the first generation, the original ‘fat’ series.

PS3 CECH-4000 fan and heatsinkWhat else struck us? One funny little detail: The RSX chip for the first time has a logo printed on, rather than just plain letters. And what does the logo look like? Like a crossover between the PS3 and PSX logos! Great fun.

An official logo for the RSX?

Naming suggestions for 4000 series PS3

No ‘Ultra Slim’. No ‘Super Slim’ either. The new, slimmer model of PlayStation 3 is simply called ‘PS3′. According to John Koller, Sony Computer Entertainment America VP of marketing, handhelds and home consoles, you may “call it the SuperSlim, the Ultrasvelte, or the LipoStation 3 — just as long as it stays positive.”

In most reports and discussions we encounter the SuperSlim name but UltraSlim is popular too, and plenty of people find this site precisely with the keywords “PS3 Ultra Slim”.

This Engadget article also explains why you’ll see no price drop for the ‘old’ PS3 models, and why the solid-state memory model (for now) is released exclusively for Europe. Frankly, we don’t really buy the explanation. We expect some SSD model to be released in North America before too soon.

By the way, nothing was announced at the  2012 Tokyo Game Show about Mexico or Latin America but information leaked prior to TGS proved SCE is planning to issue such a model over there. The main questions remaining are: when, at what price, and will it be 12GB or 16GB?

Our store is open

Since yesterday we’ve got a page showing all Amazon listings of the SuperSlim PlayStation 3 models, the CECH-4000 series. That message however got tucked away somewhat near the end of a posting, so here’s a deserved more prominent mention.

You can find the ‘store’ at http://www.ps3ultraslim.com/store.html or http://bit.ly/CECH4000. We’ll add a button shortly.

Added today: the 12GB model with no game bundled, listed at £184.99 on Amazon.co.uk.

More new SKUs

The number of options for purchasing a SuperSlim PlayStation 3 is proliferating fast. At Amazon France, today you can choose already from nine different bundles and other packages — four with 500GB, five with 12GB capacity. Probably all come with a Dual Shock 3 wireless controller, some come with a PlayStation Move wand and PlayStation Eye camera. Titles bundled include:

  • FIFA 13
  • Assassin’s Creed III
  • Uncharted 3: Drake’s Illusion
  • Gran Turismo 5 – Academy Edition
  • Need for Speed: Most Wanted
  • Wonderbook: Book of Spells
  • Sports Champions 2
  • PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale
  • Little Big Planet: Karting

 12GB 'Little BIG Planet: Karting' pack

 So both capacities are listed and you can choose any color, so long as it’s black. No white consoles here yet. Except in Japan, that is.

To make it easier, we’ve created a store page, listing all the SKUs by country. Expect more updates there in days ahead.
